Check out the new “Video Teaser” for my blog!
*UPDATE: The original version of this article was published in October of 2015 on the site rennestimestwo.com yet considering the shocking event/\terrorist attack which took place on April 23rd of 2017 at the church in Rennes-le-Chateau and all which has transpired since I decided to elaborate greatly upon the original article, adding more in-depth information on the history of this elusive Devil by the door and also include the grim details of the April attack on the church, current updates, and the long overdue outcome. Due to the over-abundance of information, I had to break this blog up into 3 parts but I will publish them together so no one is left dangling.
If you wish to see the condensed original version here is the link:
Thank you and I hope you enjoy my blog.
Chapter One
The Meet And Greet
Ladies and Gentleman, please allow me to cordially introduce to you, the one, the only, the ever mysterious and alluring little slice of Heaven, otherwise known as Rennes-le-Chateau! Never heard of it? Ahh, pull up a chair, pour yourself a glass of Languedoc’s finest, (I hear the bubbly Blanquette, made at the nearby town of Limoux is to die for,) and allow me to tantalize you with a mesmerizing tale or two… you won’t soon forget! But I should warn you, once She gets under your skin, inside your mind, wrapped around the deepest cockles of your soul and gets those hooks into you, you may never be the same again! Don’t just take my word for it, there are thousands of “Rennies” out there totally hooked and some even suffer from a rare condition called “Rennie Madness!” Be afraid…be very afraid!! I’m a very proud and enthusiastic addict myself and so far nothing has spooked me too much…well, that’s not entirely true, more on that later!
Rennes-le-Chateau – France’s Jewel of The South
This medieval enigmatic citadel sits proudly perched, like an all-seeing Bird of Prey, high atop a foothill of the glorious Pyrenees mountains, ever so deep within the pulsating heart of the Aude Department of Languedoc, France. The narrow little road weaves, curves, winds and swirls like a slithering snake as you meander up to the top. I remember my first time, I nearly hyperventilated I was so excited!! There is truly, in my humble opinion, no place like it on Earth. You can actually feel “something” indescribable, perhaps one could say, a particular brand of energy it exudes. Some may say it’s the healing essence of Mary Magdalene, whom many believe settled in this area long ago. Some say the land itself has a healing effect, others just feel an indescribably magnetic pull, long before their feet ever touch that unique land. Others will simply say it’s just a really cool and unique place. Though in all fairness, there are more than a few very unique and mysterious places in that region but RLC, as we call it, is just a wee bit different.
My First Time
I will never forget the very first time I finally made the “pilgrimage” and planted my happy little dancing feet firmly upon that sacred soil. I was like a giddy little school girl, cell phone camera rolling in one hand, video camera rolling in the other, afraid to miss one significant moment. For me, finally getting there, to that one particular pinprick on the French map was nothing short of a miracle, after all, that I had endured, which only made the moment that much sweeter and more meaningful. It was my number one bucket list destination and in all honesty, I never thought I would make there in person but I should save my personal homage and life-changing affair for another time, THIS blog is not about moi, this one is dedicated to none other than… drum roll please…. the DEVIL himself! But before you grab the kids and run screaming for the hills let’s be clear, I’m no devil worshipper, I won’t be discussing any weird Satanic creepy stuff, nor the dark arts, this devil is “different.” He is a long-standing, or should I say awkwardly kneeling, member of this unique community and a rather enigmatic character in one of the greatest mysteries yet to be solved. Let us now take a leap of faith and plunge into the many bizarre mysteries, alternate histories, and oddities which make the “Rennes-le-Chateau” experience that much more intriguing from start to finish. Though in truth, I’m not sure it’s ever really finished…..from personal experience, every time I think I’m out…IT pulls me back in!
This place is terrible?
There is a curious Latin inscription above the doorway or “Portico” as they call it, of the church in Rennes-le-Chateau with a treasure trove of clues literally etched in stone which reads the ominous phrase:
“Terriblis est Locus Iste”
Which loosely translates to “This place is Terrible.” Terrible you say? Oh my, what an ominous message our dear old friend and priest L’Abbe Bérenger Saunière passes onto his future “parishioners” from beyond the grave! Though, if you keep an open mind, then perhaps it may not be as foreboding as it sounds…maybe. The dictionary will tell you that the word “terrible” actually could mean “remarkable, formidable, familiar, great, fantastic or “pas terrible” meaning “nothing special.” Though other definitions are quite the contrary, from the Latin root, terrēre: to terrify or to cause awe: “
And he, our French priest, gives us something rather formidable to ponder as we step through the passageway, both physically and spiritually as if passing through into another dimension. Though, perhaps its best to not take things too literally when dealing with this mystery, as one will discover, very little is as it seems. And then you will see just how truly unique and quite the treasure for the eyes of the beholder this place really is. And “terrible” would not be my first choice of words to describe the feeling one has. Enchanting comes to mind, with a tinge of ominous creepiness as an added bonus.
It was he, the now infamous priest Abbé Bérenger Saunière, over a century ago, who arrived in this sleepy little town only to find his new chapel in ruins. Thus he began the task of a huge renovation and it was then that his fate would be forever changed. And in this daunting process, it was he who was rumored to have found a vast treasure and subsequently became a multi-millionaire overnight! Though to this day, NO one has yet to reveal exactly what exactly he found and how he became so wealthy. At least he acted very wealthily for several years, though truth be told, in the end, he died just as poor as when he arrived.
The story goes that one of his workers found a vile with secret parchments, some say in a hollow part of a Visigoth pillar, others say in the old and rotting wooden balustrade. And this led him apparently to find other documents and this somehow led to him on a rather peculiar and very clandestine journey. Though the speculations on what exactly he found and why he proceeded to do all the very bizarre things he did afterward are indeed endless!
“There’s Gold In Them There Hills!!”
Some say it was the “Knights Templar” who brought a vast treasure to the area after the initial 9 monks first made their great (and also very mysterious) discovery beneath the Temple Mount in Jerusalem after a 7-year excavation. Whom I may add, also became incredibly wealthy and powerful, seemingly over “Knight!” However, I should point out, they suffered a rather tragic yet familiar fate years later, there seems to be a reoccurring issue with this treasure, many claim it’s cursed!
We also have the enigmatic Visigoth Treasure thought to be buried in the area. They, of course, sacked Rome in 410 AD, then ventured up to Northern Spain and what is now southern France, (Occitania), putting them also right in the same area as our little town.
Let’s not forget the elusive Cathar Treasure, rumoured to have been spirited away the night before the horrific siege on their last stronghold of Montségur, on March 16th, 1244. Home then, of the legendary Cathar heroine, the one, the only, Esclarmonde de Foix. Her statue pictured below.
The Catholic church and the French king had waged a so-called “Holy war” aka, the deplorable Albigensian Crusades upon them between 1209 to the night of March 16th, 1244 when, it is said, that 3 or 4 brave Cathars miraculously leaped from the top of the mountain, down an impossible sheer cliff, with a 3,900-foot drop from Chateau Monségur. And in turn, kept this “treasure” safe from the clutches of the greedy church and the crown. I have a few other theories as to why the church and the king were so desperate to find this treasure and it had NOTHING to do with cleansing the land of so-called heretics! ( I have another blog on my climb to the very top of Montsegur with all sorts of tidbits, historical facts, videos of my day climb and my strange night climb.)
“Romance With France” – My Epic Journey To Montsegur”
There were also murmurings of Blanche de Castille hiding a treasure in the area to pay the ransom of her son’s kidnapping and several other rumoured treasures. So one could begin to ponder the question of why, why here? Why out of all the djinn joints in all the world, did practically everyone who found something of the UTMOST significance and value feel the immediate need to bring said treasure to this particular part of the world? There are some theories. I have spent a good chunk of the last several years working on an answer to that question.
We can’t forget to mention the rumours of the actual Ark Of The Covenant having been rumoured to be in the vicinity. Or even the Holy Grail itself in whatever shape one might imagine the Holy Grail to be in! Others still maintain that it wasn’t a monetary treasure Abbé Saunière found at all but a secret he had unearthed with perhaps irrefutable proof of something jaw-dropping. Something so HUGE that it would shake the very foundations of the Catholic faith perhaps? Or even more Earth-shattering! Thus, someone may have paid handsomely to conceal this, by any means possible.
There were whispers that he may have unearthed not only the tomb of Mary Magdalene herself but even that of her husband Jesus Christ. And I think, had that been the case, the Vatican would have paid a “Pope’s ransom” to keep that little scandalous, faith-foundation shaking secret locked in the underground vault along with the rest of our veritable history and worldly treasures!!
Disclaimer: I should point out before anyone sends me a steaming mad email, I am not sharing my personal views in this blog, for the most part, in case, some may be offended by what I am sharing. I’m merely passing on the legends, folklore, rumours, possibilities with some compelling facts, alternative history, and some very far-fetched ideas. Much of what I am putting forth would have gotten me on the next train to Heretic-ville, straight to the Inquisitor’s head office and a VIP express pass to the torture chamber and blazing fires of the stake after party. Though even today, long after the flames of that deplorable Inquisition have cooled, there are still many things which one must say with some a modicum of caution. So, I’ll share what I personally believe at a later juncture, in a safe undisclosed location… maybe.
Yet, it is the rather elaborate treasure trove of bizarre clues and encrypted messages in his not so traditional Catholic decor choices which have baffled scholars, researchers, historians, treasure hunters and mystery enthusiasts alike ever since.
Ladies And Gentlemen, may I present to you, The Devil By The Door!
Though, without question, one of the more curious clues of all eerily greets you at the door! As you step through the old wooden doorway, the first image you see, which jumps out at you, quite literally, to your left, is something rather unique in a Catholic church and seemingly, quite frightful! There, crouching ominously, is a life-size statue, with the most ghastly expression upon his hideous face of, (some say,) the devil himself!
Though, this is just one of the endless arguments because no one knows exactly who this horned, winged-clad, cape-wearing, little minion is supposed to represent and why he is crouched down staring gruesomely at the checkerboard floor in the entrance way. His eyeballs are bugging out of his head, his mouth gaping wide open as if he’s horrified and wants to share some deep, dark, nefarious secret with us. What exactly was Saunière trying to tell us with this rather bold decor statement? The possibilities are in abundance. Perhaps was he warning us of something foreboding and terrible? Or, as the dictionary will tell us, maybe he was just telling us that this place is fantastic and formidable, awe-inspiring even and not such a terrible place at all, but why little creepy demon at the door then? Why not a cute chubby cherub, like the ones holding up the large Holy water vessels shaped also like clams in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome?
Some even say he represents Pan, a mythical being with horns. Also, the Troglodytes have been mentioned, mythical creatures who live deep within the underground cave systems and rarely resurface, unless to feed under the blanket of night and are rumoured to perhaps be the cloaked guardians of the land. Sound far-fetched? Perhaps, though have you ever taken a midnight stroll around Rennes-le-Chateau? Jumpin’ Jiminy Crickets! It can get VERY CREEPY, VERY FAST! There are many stories of totally freaked out tourists who bravely decided to take a late night stroll in that area, myself included but I’ll save those stories for a new blog and I’ve got some rather hair-raising never before seen video footage to back up the claims!! Stay tuned!
Lest we forget the Bible itself, in Genesis (28:17) it was Jacob who laid his head to rest upon a stone and had a bizarre dream of a ladder extending to the heavens with angels traversing up and down and when he awoke he made a proclamation:
“This place is terrible but it is the house of God and the portal to Heaven.”
Was there a message for us here? There is also another quote from Genesis concerning angels descending upon Earth which takes on a bit more of an ominous tone and it reads:
“The giants (or Nephilim) were on the Earth in those days – and also afterward – when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children with them, the same became mighty men, who were of old, men of renown.”
The Nephilim were said to have been the offspring of fallen angels who came down or were cast down to Earth (upon Jacob’s Ladder perhaps?) and “went to” or took or perhaps raped the daughters of men and had children with them. These offspring were also said to be rather unruly giants. This is discussed at great length in “The Book Of Enoch.” which goes on to say that God was so upset with the whole affair that he brought about the great deluge to cleanse the Earth of these giant menacing creatures.
Did Saunière perhaps discover a connection to the fallen angels from “The Book Of Enoch” with the Nephilim or giants in his area? Another term, in the Talmud for the unfortunate offspring by “Fallen Angels” and human women was “Elouid” which I mention for a very good reason. I found a picture of what these half-breed creatures were said to have looked like. This particular rendition shows a not so handsome figure who indeed has horns!! Is there somehow a connection?
I should add that they described the “Elouid” as being highly intelligent, with great psychic abilities and magical powers. It is also said that they also introduced blood sacrifice to humans. Thanks, guys really not cool! Were they perhaps living like demi-gods ogres, raping women and demanding human sacrifices to appease them? Perhaps, some of these blood-thirsty horned creatures managed to escape to the depths of the subterranean cave system and managed to survive the great deluge. Which of course was originally meant to cleanse the Earth of their existence or was it? Perhaps they still roam the Earth under the blanket of night. That’s comforting, non?
Was Saunière somehow making a reference to Jacob’s Ladder, a portal to “Heaven” or perhaps even other dimensions? Which, by the way, the myths and legends of portals star gates and inter-dimensional beings in this area are in abundance, even today. Or was he eluding somehow to the existence of Fallen angels or the Nephilim by his inscription and by placing a winged, horned being at the entrance way or gateway to this sacred place? Was he implying that he had discovered an entrance or portal to the heavens nearby? Or even worse, an entrance to the underworld aka hell?
Taking into consideration that this seemingly tiny, sleepy little town and the church itself have been the subject of an endless string of unexplained and bizarre mysteries ever since and long before, Saunière made his entrance onto the scene, one must take pause and ponder. Why, in Gods’ name, would a priest put a statue of the devil at the entrance of a Catholic church unless it was a secret encoded message for those who came after him, as a very important clue to a very secret mystery, only for those with eyes of which to see? In other words, only for the few “initiated” who would understand the reference. This brings up the subject of Saunière himself being involved in certain esoteric secret societies. If one were privy to Masonic symbolism, one may see many a clue throughout the church. A secret message to his future brethren perhaps?
I’m afraid I have far surpassed the acceptable length of a normal blog, by several thousand words!! So, I will end it off here, right before I really delve into the crux of this “BS” mystery which I will share Part 2 and 3. I will share some very intriguing tidbits and also share the latest update on the restoration of Asmodeus in the church. Stay tuned and thank you so much for joining me on this little adventure!
